The Joglo

A tale of beauty and historical preservation.

Tumpang Sari

As you lay on Khayangan's comfortable king-sized bed, your gaze will surely fall upon the striking intricacy of the carvings decorating the canopy ceiling. The carving starts beneath the four house pillars and leads to the roof, which becomes higher as it nears the centre in the form of an inverted pyramid. These Intricate carvings showcase the traditional patterns and flowers migrating to the middle of the pyramid where a blooming flower rests. This elaborate decor feature, referred to as Tumpang Sari, holds an important significance in the Javanese culture. Its rising structure is believed to represent God Almighty, illustrating that above the sky, there is always a higher sky and above that, there is no higher power than God.

Villa Estate Majapahit

Deriving its name from a vast archipelagic empire with origins on the island of Java, Villa Majapahit contains a rich medley of Indonesian cultures as reflected in its ornaments and designs. History records that the Majapahit Empire, which ruled from 1293 circa 1500, was one of the most powerful empires in the history of Indonesia if not Southeast Asia.

Its empire extended to many regions beyond Indonesia and covered many modern countries that make up Southeast Asia today including Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Thailand, Philippines and East Timor.

Entering through Villa Majapahit's wooden paneled door, a pungent smell of old timber greets guests. Being the only villa without a pendopo, Villa Majapahit features a high ceiling that follows the contour of the rising funnel-shaped roofs of the joglo. Its high walls feature not only traditional Javanese lattice carvings, but also a carved wall from Toraja, located in Sulawesi, that decorates both sides of the peak corners.

The villa is also filled with many ornaments from various cultures across Indonesia, including the statue of a Pendet dance from Bali and the remnant of betel holders from Javanese aristocrats. All these details are tribute to the glorious past the Majapahit Empire and the melding of these different cultures into the one nation of Indonesia.

VIlla Estate Maharaja

A significant Sanskrit title for a great ruler of a Hindu kingdom, Villa Maharaja rules the upper estate at Khayangan. As most Indonesian kingdoms started out when the archipelago was still predominantly Hindu, many Maharajas became rulers. The illustrious title Maharaja conjures up a vision of splendor and magnificence. Patrons of the arts and fine jewelry they enjoyed basking in the finest things of life without concern for cost.

This opulent lifestyle has been translated into every facet of Villa Maharaja's lavish setting. The villa entry welcomes guests through a massive four-paneled wooden gate equipwed with double lock for the Maharaja's protection.

The main bed, swathed in flowing white drapes, is placed under an intricate two-pyramid shape tumpang sari, the perfect setting for the ruling king to find rest and relaxation. Passing through the main bedroom and through a glass door, Villa Maharaja opens up to an exquisite water garden, an idylic private Eden where the royal couple would enjoy quality time bathing inside a floating bathtub amidst a sea of blooming lotus.

As a token of well-wishes for the ruling couple, ornaments of noble pairing known as "Loro Blonyo" decorate many corners of Villa Maha-raja. Originally from Central Java, the sculpture of a Javanese noble couple, regarded as a symbol of an inseparable union, were commonly gifted to newlyweds as a sincere wish for long lasting happiness and fertility.

Living Room

The living room in Khayangan Estate is indeed a very special place. Occupying the oldest joglo in the entire Khayangan Estate, it bears an important significance as the keystone that holds the whole complex together and in turn serves as a gathering place for families to come together to dine and relax. The joglo also serves as a recreational room sporting a collection of traditional games families can play.
